Manager reveals that he’s “turned down an offer from Celtic” as Lennon looks to add winger

Celtic have had an offer for Charlton Athletic winger Alfie Doughty turned down after the Addicks gaffer, Lee Bowyer, confirmed the interest speaking to The South London Press.

Talksport reported the interview in which Bowyer claims that the 20-year old winger would be better off staying with Charlton and playing in League 1 rather than heading north to possibly win trophies and play in European football.

Speaking after his side’s 3-1 over Swindon in the Carabao Cup, he said:

“We did turn down an offer from Celtic and they were at the game at the weekend, from what I understand. But we’ve not heard anything since.”

“In an ideal world, and this is just me speaking on how I would advise Alfie, it would be for him to sign another deal and do another year – do a full season with us

“He only came into the side at a stage later in last season. He did well. He gets himself into great positions – like when he went through against AFC Wimbledon and on Saturday – but it is his end product that he has to work on.

“If he stays with us for another season he will improve more, because he has improved lots since he has been with us.”

Bowyer is obviously looking after his own interests but it isn’t the first time that he has tried to block a player moving onto bigger and better things and he should pay more respect to a team that is obviously a step up from his own.

What would the best move be?

Another year with Charlton in League 1.

Another year with Charlton in League 1.

Move to Celtic and win 10IAR.

Neil Lennon does need extra cover out wide and Doughty would provide competition for James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi as the gaffer fine tunes his squad ahead of one of the most eagerly anticipated seasons in the clubs long and unbroken history.
