With Celtic’s need for a competent centre-back growing in the final week of the summer transfer window, one potential option is signing up Manchester City defender Philippe Sandler on a long-term loan.

Most Celtic fans will tell you that they are growing a little tired of the continuing relationship with the English champions, but the fact is that we’ve not done half bad out of utilising our contacts down there.

Jason Denayer was excellent for a season, we got a good two-and-a-half years out of Patrick Roberts, we managed to negotiate beneficial deals for Dedryck Boyata and Olivier Ntcham.

Having also signed up the talented Daniel Arzani to a two-year loan deal, it’s been a useful transfer strategy in recent years.

Brendan Rodgers was at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday taking in City’s match with Huddersfield Town, leading some to wonder which players he may have been discussing, if indeed he was there on club business.

One option is Philippe Sandler, who only recently arrived at City from PEC Zwolla.

Rated at £2.25m by Transfermarkt and emerging as a regular in Eredivisie last season, he got his initial football education at Ajax before making 33 appearances for the other Dutch outfit.

At 21 years of age he may not the tick the experience box that many fans are craving, but he certainly appears to have talent. He simply wouldn’t have moved to City otherwise.

It’s certainly a name to keep an eye on in the final week of the transfer window.
