Celtic are interested in signing Iranian World Cup star Milad Mohammadi this summer, a left-back currently contracted to Russian Premier League side Akhmat Grozny.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun anyway, who report that the Hoops are rivalling Rangers for his signature ahead of the new season. They say the versatile defender is one of the options that the club are considering to provide much needed back-up for Kieran Tierney.

Tierney doesn’t have direct, natural back-up currently and played 55 of Celtic’s 61 games last season, at times looking noticeably fatigued in the position. While it looks like he will be stay at Celtic Park next season, the first team squad desperately needs natural cover and competition to push the player’s game on to new heights.

Rated at £2.5m by Transfermarkt, 24-year-old Mohammadi appears to fit the bill having made over 50 appearances for Akhmat Grozny over the past two seasons. He played in two of Iran’s group stage matches against Spain and Portugal.

Despite the record signing of Odsonne Edouard this summer, Celtic have failed to address strengthening the defensive line and investing in a 21-cap international with plenty of years ahead of him would be considered a smart move.

Has Mohammadi impressed Rodgers enough for the club to make a firm offer for the player?
