As the Roy Keane to Hibs story grabs Scottish football’s imagination, this prompted the Daily Record to run a series of classic quotes from the Republic of Ireland and Manchester United legend.

Keane left the English giants to join Celtic way back in Gordon Strachan’s reign and whilst it was a largely successful time for the player  as he picked up a league and cup double the Record printed an excerpt from the Irishman’s autobiography where Keane tells the story of his debut against Clyde in the 2-1 loss in the Scottish Cup, “My first game was Clyde, away, in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

“We were beaten 2-1. It was a nightmare. I wasn’t happy with my own game.

“I did OK, but OK wasn’t good enough. After the game – the disappointment.

“As I was taking my jersey off, I noticed the Nike tag was still on it.

“When I got on the bus John Hartson, a really good guy, was already sitting there and he was eating a packet of crisps – with a fizzy drink. I said to myself, ‘Welcome to Hell’.”

I remember that day like it was yesterday. The excitement of seeing Keane overtaken by the embarrassment of going two down to a part time Clyde team will live long in the memory.

But I think it will live longer in Keanes.
