When Celtic announced the Player of The Year Awards on Twitter, the Hoops fans reacted with complete disdain and disgust. Many called the awards embarrassing and called for them to be cancelled. One fan even said, “You have to be taking the p***”.

However, there have been many seasons where Celtic have been poor and trophy less and not to sound too much like a ‘Celtic da’, the nineties were absolutely woeful and we still held the awards (Jesus, I remember watching Celtic in Hampden).  Even  our Glasgow rivals held POYT awards when Celtic were rampant during our second 9IAR.

However, I digress. On Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Hugh Keevins (obviously) was against the idea of the club holding the awards ceremony calling the players an ’embarrassment to their fans’, “Have it by all means. I just think that Celtics started off having set the bar very very high wanting ten in a row.  They have been an embarrassment to their fans. I just think the fans would be embarrassed by a Player of the Year contest.”

“I’m playing devil’s advocate here, but whoever gets it is the least embarrassing.”

Who is your player of the year?

The caller at the time, a Celtic fan called Frank, was all for the awards ceremony and made the point that at least the club should recognise the emergence of Turnbull as a shining light in such a poor season,  and after Keevins’ comments, he could not hide his distaste at the pundit, “I think you are being very disrespectful to Turnbull.  Turnbull has not been embarrassing. So don’t use the word embarrassing when it comes to Turnbull please,. That’s just really poor.”

Turnbull has been an outstanding professional this season within a squad that has done nothing but look after their own interests and engineer moves away from the club and whatever anyhone thinks of the awards, his efforts should be recognised by the club and the fans.
