Double hopes ended

Holders Celtic were dumped out of the Scottish Cup after Aberdeen came from behind at Parkhead to end their hopes of a repeat domestic double.

Anthony Stokes earned the hosts an early lead that was cancelled out by Russell Anderson before the break. Peter Pawlett then scored what proved the winner five minutes into the second-half.

Adam Matthews was earlier declared fit and Georgios Samaras was also recalled. But it was Stokes soon drilling his side in front on nine minutes from Samaras’ inviting through pass.

Virgil van Dijk then struck a free-kick narrowly wide as the current holders continued to press forward while Andrew Considine headed over from a corner in reply.

And it was another corner which brought about an equaliser when Anderson hooked in for the first goal conceded by home keeper Fraser Forster in a dozen games.

Ironically a second was not long coming with Barry Robson once again the provider and Pawlett providing the finish early in the second-half.

Celtic’s response had van Dijk and Efe Ambrose missing with headers and Kris Commons also shooting wide, although Pawlett almost added a third for the visitors following a defensive scramble.

Despite the introduction of latest signing Leigh Griffiths the Dons stayed resolute throughout with Jamie Langfield easily claiming from Stokes, while newcomer Griffiths and fellow replacement Amido Balde also failed with later attempts.
