It was a great call. At the time it didn’t seem like it but as the call went on you could feel the direction it was going and it caught the live radio panel on the hop.

Last night, a “football fan” named, Charlie,  called Clyde 1 Superscoreboard and corrected host, Gerry McCulloch, when he was referred to as a “Rangers” fan but that he was, in fact, a football fan. It all started off pretty amicably as the caller congratulated Steven Gerrard on his achievements and how what he had done in his time here had been “phenomenal” for Scottish football.

Then it all turned on it’s head as the “Charlie”, took a slightly different direction with his point, “I wanted to congratulate Steven Gerrard. At the end of the day, what an achievement for  Steven Gerrard what he has done, how he’s turned angers around. It’s phenomenal for Scottish football. It’s brilliant.

“But the question I have for you lads and I hope, please don’t see this as anything other than just the question that what it is. Is this league one or league fifty five?. Because, as far as I was concerned that club was restarted again in 2012 under a new name.

Is "Rangers" a new club?

YES

YES

NO

NO

“And I just think you see merchandise has been put up for “fifty five”. And I just don’t know if that’s right or wrong on not just Celtic but on all clubs. And if that’s the case and they want to deny that this is the case, they want to deny what’s happened, then Celtic could just delete this year and say ‘We’ll go for 10 in a row next year’ because technically they are a new club.”

In fairness to Gordon Duncan, he took the call light heartedly and asked fellow pundit and journalist, Roger Hannah, if he would like to “show his hand” and he did EXACTLY that when he said,  “I’ve always been quite steady on this. I think if they play in blue, and they play a Ibrox stadium and they call themselves Rangers, then, in my mind, they are Rangers, and, in my mind, this would be title number fifty five”.

I am pretty sure the creditors that the old “company” failed to pay would have a rather different view than Hannah’s simplistic outlook on this matter!
