As it seems ever more likely that Celtic captain, Scott Brown, could leave the Hoops for a coaching role at Aberdeen, a senior journalist has warned that if Brown is allowed to leave this season, Celtic may as well give up the chance of winning the title next season.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, journalist Mark Guidi, fired a warning shot to the Parkhead board that allowing their Quadruple Treble captain to leave for Aberdeen will have dire consequences and effectively hand their Glasgow rivals a massive advantage going into the new season, “His performance from me yesterday (Sunday’s derby) shows that he should be given a new contract right away. Don’t mess about. He’s got a lot to offer any Celtic fans that say differently are being stubborn or deluded. He has got a lot to offer.

“And I would go so far as to say if Scott Brown is not given a new contract, then you’re just putting one hand on the league championship for Rangers retaining it next season. That’s how important he could be on and off the pitch next season.”

I have to agree with some of the points Guidi makes here.  Celtic will need a strong leader next season as the turnaround in personnel, if as being predicted by many, is going to be huge not only in players coming and going but the backroom staff, stability will be required at the club and Scott Brown can offer that.

With next season’s league champions being granted automatic entry into the Champion League group stages, the question is not whether Celtic can afford to give Brown a new contract but whether they can afford NOT to.
