Just three days into his new tenure as the new Chief Executive at Celtic, there seems to be nothing coming from Dom McKay as yet on any hierarchy changes looming at Parkhead anytime soon.

Two names that have been doing the rounds for the position of Director of Football are ex Hoops gaffers, Gordon Strachan and Martin O’Neill and although both were linked with a return to Celtic Park last year, there has been no approach that we know of yet about the Director of Football role.

Speaking exclusively to Vital Celtic, Frank McAvennie has said that both would be a great contact to have at hand if a young manager like John Kennedy got the top job at Paradise, “I think Gordon Strachan or a Martin O’Neill would be a good head to go to if John Kennedy got the job.  And, I think John’s temperament is that he is his own man so it’s whether he would want that.

“I’m a great believer that you can’t beat experience. I mean I’m sure they would be on the other end of the phone anyway if he needed it just like any other greats of the club would.

Should John Kennedy become the next Celtic manger?

NO

YES

“I think it’s too much of a job for Gordon and Martin. I don’t think they want to come back into football but to be there for a bit of advice? Yeah I can see that happening. I think it’s a young mans job to be a Director of Football to go and see players. I know everything’s done on computers nowadays.

“You go and see someone in the atmosphere, you go and see someone on the pitch. When you’re looking at a computer you only see the best bits. You can see different things when you can watch a game. He might let me be lazy sod and all of a sudden he comes to life in the box. He might not be a team player.

“So you’ve got to go and see players, and that’s what a Director of Football does and I don’t see Gordon or Martin doing that.”

From listening to Strachan after the Glasgow Derby defeat to Rangers, I would have no qualms about him being offered the DoF role at Celtic Park, or Martin O’Neill for that matter. Both speak passionately about Celtic and have vasts amounts of experience to draw on regardless whether it is a young manager or not that is appointed.
