Is the Scottish football market dying when it comes to Celtic recruitment?

As much as Celtic like to scout and spend money on players across world football, into Europe at least, the club has always made sure it tries to retain the brightest Scottish talents emerging through the leagues in domestic football.

However, is it becoming a market that produces players below the standard the Hoops are looking for?

That’s the question in our debate of the week.

Even when players have gone on to become a success at Celtic Park, there’s often been something of a snobbery aimed at Scottish-based players arriving at the club in the last 20 years.

The likes of Scott Brown, Paul Hartley, Scott McDonald and Leigh Griffiths all had to fight against initial concerns about their suitability to excel for the club at the highest level, though all proved themselves domestically and abroad in green and white over time.

Recently though, both the players arriving from other SPFL clubs and prospective targets have done little to inspire supporters, even when given a chance in the first team.

Jack Hendry has come under immense criticism since joining from Dundee in January. He looks a player thrown in at the deep end and despite Brendan Rodgers’ assertion he is a player with a big future at the club, the evidence on the pitch hasn’t backed it up.

A transfer target in the summer from Aberdeen, Scott McKenna, is also doing little to impress Celtic fans right now who are watching him in action for the Dons and for the Scotland national team, alongside Hendry.

Both were poor on Sunday and although they faced stiff opposition in Portugal, it was another sign that they might below the standard Celtic require and both have been stand-outs in the Scottish Premiership.

Kilmarnock right-back Stephen O’Donnell is another player who has shone brightly in the top-flight but looked distinctly average against a step up in opposition. It appears he wouldn’t be good enough for Celtic either and he’s considered one of the best defenders in the league.

Home-grown talent like James Forrest, Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor are all mainstays, but when it comes to actual recruitment of established players, the Scottish Premiership is perhaps less appealing than its ever been.

In years to come, the club will either need to integrate academy players into the squad more and more or go beyond Scottish shores to bring in the talent we need from abroad, which is a sad indictment on players coming through elsewhere in the league.

Do you think Scottish football is becoming a dying market when it comes to recruitment?
