Celtic have made Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna their big transfer target as we approach the final week of the summer transfer window, according to The Daily Mail.

The paper say that Brendan Rodgers has recently sent staff to watch the player in action, with the club lodging an official £3.5m bid for the player over the last few days.

That was quickly kicked into touch though and The Mail reckon that the Dons value the player as worth at least £5m.

It’s a valuation that both clubs know that Celtic can afford, but may not be willing to stretch to, making negotiations tricky as we hurtle towards the end of August.

The Hoops could include the likes of Ryan Christie and Jonny Hayes as a makeweight, according to the report.

The Pittodrie club are in a strong position, with McKenna’s current contract not expiring until 2023.

Having made just 41 appearances for the Dons, critics of the deal will suggest he doesn’t have the experience to make an immediate impact at Celtic Park.

However, the Scotland international has emerged as one of the better defenders in the division and at just 21 years of age holds significant potential.

It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out in the wake of the McGinn debacle and in the context of Celtic badly needing a defender to strengthen the first-team squad.
