The Angeball World Tour, as it’s been touted in Australia has caused all manner of controversy over the last week or so.

So much so that the fans reaction from both sides has made headline news from Glasgow to Sydney.

We all know the reasons why most are so dead against the idea of taking the Glasgow Derby and turning it into a friendly and we all know both clubs fans specific reasons for not wanting this fixture to go ahead but I’m not getting into that again.

What did interest me though was journalist, Mark Guidi’s reaction to the tour and he made a claim that could have huge financial ramifications for both clubs should it come true.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, when asked if he understood why fans are so upset, Guidi said, “I can’t quite get my head around the reaction.

“But if fans from both sides are not happy, and clearly they aren’t, there’s a number of fans that aren’t.

“There’s not too many that are saying that they are fine about it. But it tends to be that if people are against it, that’s what makes the most noise.

“Maybe it’s not ideal, I can get it, you know. But the reaction, when both clubs are going for a title, they’re in the Scottish Cup quarter finals, the amount of energy and column inches and debate on programs such as this, I can’t quite and get my head round it.

“Yes, everybody have their opinion, but just rein it in a bit.

“The clubs boards are there, they try their best. They won’t get everything right? They don’t get everything right. But they do try and put the clubs best interests a theart.

“And financially, I don’t know the exact figure, but it will certainly be lucrative.

“And in this day and age if you want to they have good managers, if you want to  try and enhance the budget and bring in the best players available,  if you can go and bring in healthy sums it all helps going into the pot.

“But we’ll wait and see and it wouldn’t surprise me if the tournament in Australia collapses because of the weight of the pressure of the of the supports and both sides.”

There is no way the tour will be cancelled now. I would imagine that contracts would have had to be signed with sponsors, accommodation already booked in advance and travel plans already in place.

Even breaking the contract could have massive financial ramifications for both clubs should it be terminated and that’s not even including having to write off the $10m+ Celtic are claimed to be on for participating.

The storm will calm and the tour will carry on.

There will be plenty more things to get fans angry over the coming weeks.

Of that you can be sure.

    Some issues with this Paddy!

““But if fans from both sides are not happy, and clearly they aren’t, there’s a number of fans that aren’t.” What does that mean?

Sorry to be pedantic but it is “rein in” not “reign in”. As in horse, not parasite monarchy.

I agree that cancellation is a non-starter but I’m amazed at your £10+m figure quoted – not seen anything like that elsewhere. What’s that based on?

Hi Tim. Thanks for taking the time to read. To answer your points, $10m+ dollars. A typo on my part. The quote you refer to is pretty clear to me that fans on both sides are not happy with the friendly being organised. And have amended “rein”. HH
