Celtic’s need for defensive cover has been well spoken about ever since the middle of last season.

With the failure of Shane Duffy and injury to Christopher Julien, Celtic have had to compete at the start of this season with a makeshift centre back pairing of Stephen Welsh and Nir Biton until the arrival of Carl Starfelt forced Biton out the team.

Young Welsh has equipped himself brilliantly and bagged a goal in yesterdays 3-2 Premier Sports cup win against Hearts, but defensive mistakes at the back let the visitors back into a game that should have been out of sight before half time.

Long has the speculation been continuing about Celtic’s pursuit of Shamrock Rovers Liam Scales. After the 23 year old defenders team’s win against Drogheda United at the weekend, Scale’s manager gave a frank and open update at the future of his young defender.

Speaking to The Independent, Stephen Bradley said, “We’ve all spoken openly from the start.

“There’s his thinking and our thinking; both clubs have dealt with it really well.

“He’ll definitely be involved in the first one (Flora Tallinn first leg) and hopefully the second. I’m not sure where Liam’s end is at.

“Our stuff is tied up. I’d imagine with the window closing at the end of the month, it’s getting there. If not after Tallinn, it will definitely be soon.

“We did things at our end. Liam has a decision to make and I’m pretty sure where his mind is. He’s been brilliant, he’s been dealing with this background for a while and you wouldn’t think it looking at him. He’s played every minute.”

So it seems that there could be further movement on the transfer front for Celtic before the end of the week. We all wait with baited breath.
