I have covered Carl Starfelt and how he has been treated by the footballing pundits in this country on numerous occasions.

Starfelt, in my opinion, was the victim of a media witch hunt when he first arrived at the club.

His debut appearance for the club against Hearts at the beginning of last season was marred with an own goal in a 2-1 defeat that kind of set the tone amongst certain pundits in the media.

Tom English was one that was heavily critical of the Swede, Mark Wilson defended him on occasion and Hugh Keevins has been a long-time critic of him.

And it is not only this site that has called out this treatment of Starfelt.  The boys at The Celtic Exchange also blasted what they called a ‘vendetta’ against the big defender.

But it was Hugh Keevins’ claim on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard that really captured my attention on the show and drew a stunned reaction from the pundits on the show. Have a listen:

For those without audio, Keevins said, “At the back for Celtic, for me, Starfelt is an Achilles heel.

“I think the Celtic fans can’t wait to get Kobayashi in the team and get Starfelt out.”

That’s an incredible statement to make with no evidence to back it up.

I have evidence to debunk this ludicrous claim.

Starfelt’s partnership with CCV last season formed a formidable defence that conceded the least amount of goals in the league. We won the league that season as well.

This season, without the Swede, we have already conceded 13 goals. Last season, with Starfelt in the defence we conceded a total of 22.

It also backs up my claim that Starfelt has been, and still continues to be, the media whipping boy.

I wish these pundits would put a modicum of research into their accusations before they make them.

It’s little wonder their opinions are not taken seriously by the Celtic fans.

Who were Celtic’s most expensive transfer additions in these seasons?
