Rodgers hints at permanent selection change in his Celtic starting eleven

|

Brendan Rodgers is looking to give goalkeeper Scott Bain a run of games in the Celtic first-team after good performances against Airdrie and St Mirren.

The former Dundee and Alloa Athletic shot-stopper has shown excellent improvement since joining the Hoops last year and now looks comfortable playing in Rodgers’ preferred system of using his ‘keeper to sweep up play and pass out from the back quickly and sharply.

With excellent shot-stopping abilities also on display in the cup match against Airdrie, fans have been clamouring for him to replace Craig Gordon between the sticks at Celtic Park.

Rodgers spoke after the St Mirren match about the situation, telling The Daily Mail:

I’ve got two very good goalkeepers and I’m giving Scott a little run in the team because I know what Craig can do. Scott comes in and plays one or two games so I want to give him a little run and he also really helps the speed of our game because he gets it out quickly. I’ve got very good goalkeepers and whichever one I play will always contribute well.

Clearly diplomatic with his answer, it would nonetheless be a surprise to see Craig Gordon play again this weekend when Hamilton come to town in the Scottish Premiership.

Don’t get me wrong, Gordon is a fine goalkeeper, but Bain looks far more comfortable linking up with defenders in front of him when he has the ball at his feet.

With the backing of supporters and now apparently the manager, is the 27-year-old emerging as the team’s new number one goalkeeper?
