Over the course of his managerial career, Brendan Rodgers has had the pleasure of coaching several talented players, many of whom are characterised with vast Premier League pedigree. The Bhoys’ manager has the opportunity to reunite with Glen Johnson, whom he managed during his time as the Liverpool boss. Should Celtic make a move for the free agent?

As the Daily Record reports, Glen Johnson is one of several Premier League free agents who could interest either Celtic or Rangers in the summer transfer window.  The English defender is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Stoke City. The 33-year-old only made ten appearances in all competitions for the Potters last season, and while his potential arrival may not provide the Bhoys with longevity, he could prove to be an intriguing option for Brendan Rodgers – one who offers tremendous insight and substantial experience.

Given his age and his declining influence, Johnson may not be the best target to assume a starting position in Brendan Rodgers’ team. However, as a backup, the Englishman could prove to be an astute addition to the team.  As previously established, Johnson is endowed with considerable experience and useful know-how. Moreover, towards the latter stages of his career, Johnson has become more adaptable.

Despite failing to feature prominently for Stoke last season, Johnson succeeded to play as a right-back, a centre-back and even as a wing-back. This willingness to explore different positions and fill-in where required could be of exceeding benefit to Celtic. Furthermore, his experience and knowledge could be utilised by mentoring younger players at the club.

This may not be the most exciting target for the Celtic supporters to enjoy, but it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business from the Bhoys’ perspective.
