As Celtic look to be closing in on appointing Eddie Howe to become the next Celtic manager, the guys at A Celtic State of Mind, hosted by Paul John Dykes, who was also joined by Lawrence Connolly and Natasha Meikle, where discussing why one of the other top candidates, Rafa Benitez, would not be a suitable candidate.

As the discussion moved on, Lawrence began to talk through the personnel changes and how this would benefit the amount of money becoming available, when he offered an interesting opinion on how much funds the incoming manager may have at his disposal to strengthen the squad, “Look, we’ve got a number of players moving on. I think that’s going to have the potential of giving us a decent budget. I think the wage bill is also going to be down dramatically.

Will Celtic regret letting Scott Brown go?

“We have got a lot of our top earners leaving so that’s another big factor when we bring players in where they come in on the wage bill.

“So I think I can see us having £30m to spend in the transfer market but  would that be enough for someone like Benitez? Whereas as with some other managers that might bring in five players for him and that might suit us better.”

£30m would be a hefty amount of money to bring in 5 or 6 quality players but only if the incoming new manager is allowed to invest the money where he see’s fit. With the imminent departure of C.E.O. Peter Lawwell and the ex Head of Recruitment Nicky Hammond gone, the hope would be that the incoming gaffer should have more freedom to utilise the transfer kitty as he sees fit.
