Remember Piero Hincapie?
No? Let me refresh your memory. The Ecuadorian defender was heavily linked with a move to Celtic last summer but instead opted to take the plunge to the German Bundesliga after Bayer Leverkusen splashed out just under £6m for the 20-year-old.
With 21 caps for his country, Hincapie is now tipped to make a stunning €25m move [Calciomercato] with AC Milan, Roma and Napoli all expected to enter a bidding war for the player.
Hincapie has made just 42 appearances for Leverkusen and featured against the Hoops in both Europa League fixtures where Celtic lost 4-0 and 3-2 respectively to the German club.
At the time of Celtic’s reported interest, I did say that investing in the youngster would be a gamble worth taking and I have been proven to be correct with Leverkusen set to quadruple their investment after just one full season.
Celtic opted, at the time to sign Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers and whilst both have been incredible for the club, will we look back at Hincapie and ever wonder if he was the one that got away?
