Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is today continuing his one man vendetta against Celtic full back Anthony Ralston.

McAvennie has been critical of late of the Celtic full back which is incredible as he has been one of the Hoops best players in the open league games of the season.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie was speaking of the first goal Celtic conceded against Bayer Leverkusen and said of Ralston, “Turnbull should not have been in that position.

“He was in the right-back position and Ralston should have been there.

“How many times can I say it? These defenders are not good enough. They just aren’t good enough.

“Turnbull made a massive error, yes. But get off his back. He should not have been there.

“He was covering because Ralston, as usual, was out of position.

“These are the things we need to fix.”

Strange comments from McAvennie considering Ralston wasn’t out of position.

Ralston was exactly where he was meant to be playing the inverted full back role.

It’s not the first time McAvennie has been critical of the young Scottish full back.

After the 4-3 loss to Real Betis, he branded Ralston ‘lazy’, “Ralston wasn’t tracking back last night.

“I know he’s trying hard and doing well, scoring goals which is impressive for a full back.

“I just want my defenders to defend, it’s lazy.”

He was also critical of Ralston back in August after the 2-1 away loss to Hearts where he strangely contradicted himself regarding the 22 year old defensive qualities, “The defensive part of his game isn’t great even though he does put a good tackle in now and then.”

It really is beginning to get tiresome with McAvennie.

The man never seems to have a good word to say about Celtic or the players. He is trying to hard to make himself look relevant by being a constant critic of the club but to be quite honest, it’s a tiresome tactic to keep himself in the headlines.
