Current Scotland boss Steve Clarke has admitted that he once held talks with Dermot Desmond to become the new Celtic manager.

Back in the summer of 2014, Celtic were on the lookout for a new manager after the then boss, Neil Lennon, left Celtic Park after he claimed he wanted a ‘new challenge’ and had to move on, “I have supported Celtic all my life and the club will always be part of me.

“However, I feel the time is now right to move on to a new challenge”.

Celtic eventually appointed Ronny Delia that summer but it could have all been so different had talks between Desmond and Clarke been more fruitful.

Clarke admitted that over confidence may have cost him the Celtic job.  When interviewed by The Daily Record he said, “At the start of that summer, I was quite confident I’d come out the other side in a job of some kind.

“I met Dermot Desmond at his place in London and we had a good chat. I was interviewed by Brighton at around the same time.

“I had two really good interviews at two really good clubs and ended up runner-up in both.

“Celtic appointed Ronny Deila and Sami Hyypia got the Brighton job. So it was a little lesson for me not to be too confident about getting a job in future.”

A truly sensational account of what could have been but as the Scotland boss prepares his side for the Euro’s this summer, there is a great saying which is very prevalent here that goes “What’s for you won’t go by you“.
