There will be rumours. There will be conjecture. There will be speculation.

And until a new Chief Executive of Celtic is hired and served up to the public, journalists, bloggers and Celtic fans will all be guessing at who the new man will be.

As long as Peter Lawwell doesn’t return, anyone will do. Right?

Maybe so but as Vital Celtic reported last night, there is one man being tipped to take over the role by Mark Guidi on Go Radio.

The name popped up again on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard when another journalist and regular pundit on the show, Roger Hannah, also tipped the stand in CEO to take over the role permanently from the ousted Dom McKay, “I know the club have high hopes for Michael Nicholson. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he ended up getting the job on a permanent basis.

“I think he is  highly regarded inside the club and outwith the club as well.

“But anytime someone as high profile as Dominic McKay, and he was high profile in Scottish sporting circles before he went to Celtic in his role as Chief Operating Officer of Scottish rugby.

“When someone of that high profile leaves a job so soon there will be questions and the Celtic supporters will be looking for some answers.”

Now, not much is known about Nicholson except that he has been at Celtic Park since 2013 after being headhunted by Peter Lawwell as the Director of Legal and Football Affairs.

Should the fact that he is a Lawwell man put the fear into the Celtic support as it seems to send out a message that the retired CEO may yet still have a firm grip on club business after all?
