News outlet’s bizarre reason for stopping Celtic coverage

As many readers will know, I scour as many news outlets as I can to bring as much Celtic information to our readers as possible.

Whether it be from YouTube, podcasts or the MSM, anything I think is relevant will be brought to you.

The Athletic was one such news outlet I enjoyed covering. Especially when Kieran Devlin was the man in bringing the coverage.

Devlin left The Athletic about seven months ago and content covering our club has been sporadic, at best.

And whilst the Celtic fans waited patiently for a new reporter to come on board, a message was posted by the Editor-in-Chief, Alex Kay-Jelski:

“As many of you know, our writer Kieran Devlin left for a change of career a few months ago, which gave us an opportunity to reflect on our coverage.

“It’s not been an easy decision but we have decided to no longer have a dedicated correspondent for Celtic.

“Since we launched football in 2019, we have tried to work with the club as we have with all the other big teams in Europe but, as is their prerogative, they decided not to allow us access to press conferences, home games or their media team to check basic news stories.

“That made the basics of our job almost impossible, though we hopefully managed to provide some insight for you through analysis of matches, use of data and features.”

Weird. I don’t have access to Celtic’s media team, press conferences or home games yet still manage to cover the club pretty comprehensively.

And I don’t get the resources or backing that The Athletic has either.

And what about the paying subscribers that have been forking out every month with very limited Celtic news?

It’s very poor and from the feel of the feedback, there are a lot people cancelling their subs.

Like me.
