“The club must keep it’s word” – Celtic star on Parkhead exit. Why are the club making these astounding promises?

|

There seems to be a common theme here amongst Celtic Football Club and it’s top stars. And the theme is worrying.  Kristoffer Ajer made clear his intentions at leaving Celtic Park this summer citing certain promises made to him by the club. And by club, one can only assume the board.

Clarifying his reasons why he stated he wanted to leave so publicly this afternoon, Ajer said that he agreed to stay to help the club win ten in a row after promises made to him if he did. In a brilliant thread by TheCynicWolf on twitter the big Norwegian said, ‘I was promised I could leave last summer, but we then agreed I would stay to try and help club win 10 in a row. That was important to the club, but unfortunately we didn’t succeed. Now I’m expecting the club to keep its word (about allowing him to leave)’.

And there is that word. Promised. A word that has caused Celtic so many player problems in recent years. Thinking back to Moussa Dembele when the French striker said there were certain promises made to him that were broken by Celtic until Brendan Rodgers stepped in to resolve the situation. Although by all accounts, it seems Dembele was actually telling the truth.

Is Ange Postecoglou the man for the Celtic job?

Then history repeated itself with Odsonne Edouard when the striker was apparently promised a move if Celtic received a bid that matched both club and players valuation. That move never materialised and it seems Edouard downed tools for the better part of this season.

Three players. All made promises. Two, allegedly, not kept and one to be continued. Just what is going on at Celtic that they feel the need to make these promises just to break them? The unrest and lack of trust this causes in the dressing room is tantamount to Celtic’s incredible collapse and resulting trophy-less season.

There clearly needs to be a change in direction at Celtic Park and tact by the board when it comes to player negotiations as clearly the amateurish way they have dealt with three top players at the club (and three we know about) is affecting performances on the park. Is it not bad enough that them upstairs are picking the players for the manager?
