As Celtic returned to action last night the fans packed Paradise to the rafters in the hope of seeing their new recruits for the first time this season.

With Kyogo still out injured, we got the opportunity to look at Daizen Maeda for the first time and it is fair to say, he has impressed the supporters.

Scoring just three minutes into his debut was a dream start for the Japanese striker and it looks like, for the first time this season, we have a proper back up striker, if not challenger to Kyogo.

Hatate was first class and he looks like a very shrewd piece of business by Ange Postecoglou after his man of the match performance.

And Ideguchi? After only ten minutes, it is difficult to say what king of effect he will have on the team. But he did appear for just ten minutes so judgement will be reserved for now.

In fact, judgement on them all will be reserved as it is very early in their careers and maybe, just maybe, this is something that BBC journalist Tom English should have thought of as he ran the rule over Celtic’s new signings.

Speaking post match on BBC Sportsound, English, rather bizarrely, said, “I mean if you look at what you would call their ‘Best eleven‘ and all Celtic fans would have a different interpretation of what best eleven is.

“But I mean, I wouldn’t have, in their best eleven,  I wouldn’t have Maeda, Forrest, Johnson, Ideguchi, Ralston, Welsh, possibly Jullien, Bitton, McCarthy, all those guys I wouldn’t have them in.

“I’m a big fan [of Abada]. This kid has got ten goals in the first half of the season.

“You know, he’s got a lot of assists. He did well today. He’s extremely hard worker. He gets goals. He creates stuff.

“I would have him in all day long.”

How can you say that Ideguchi and Maeda would not feature in a ‘Celtic best XI’ after just one match?

So I’m assuming that Hatate would seeing as he wasn’t mentioned which is just as crazy as well.

The media are far too quick put players on a pedestal and they are even quicker at knocking them off it as well.

Just let the players settle into life at Celtic FIRST, all the other stuff will take care of itself.

He’s a fool who doesn’t know anything about fitba. He exists for click bait, nothing more. I got one will never click on bbc.
He should stick to the oval ball.. Even then, he lives on click bait.

I know English, he is not at the back of the queue when it come to sticking the boot into us but his comments about Abada, a kid who has been exemplary for us, were spot on. As for his list of players who would not make the first 11, Maeda, Ideguche, Forrest and Julien have the potential to make him, again, look extremely foolish.

Tom English thinks they were playing rugby.

  • John Melone says:

I agree with Tom English with the possible exception of Ideguchi who may sneak in ahead of Turnbull eventually. All of these guys are going to get minutes as Ange will look to rotate.
