As the Celtic board continue the search for the Celtic manager, a lot of speculation was made about Martin O’Neill and his apparent role in the search for a new manager.

Many media outlets suggested that O’Neill was acting in a consultation capacity for the Celtic board and that O’Neill was recommending Keane for the Celtic job.

Speaking to Rob McLean on The Go Radio Football Show, O’Neill put the record straight and revealed that he has not had contact with Celtic’s principal shareholder for a number of years, and clarified what he meant when speaking about Keane in a managerial capacity, “I was generalising about the fact that he had been around for some time and lots of jobs have taken place and Roy doesn’t seem to get a mention. So,  I’m not party to anything there at all.

Roy Keane for next Celtic gaffer?

YES

YES

NO

NO

“I haven’t spoken to him (Dermot Desmond) for a long long time now, and I think Dermot is very, very capable of picking his own managers.  He will have sounding boards there at Celtic I’m quite sure  on whatever he wants to do.

“And I think over the years, certainly since he took over I think his choice of managers have generally worked out.”

Keane has suddenly found himself odds on favourite today as the media hype for the Republic of Ireland legend ramps up the volume of Keane being named the new man.

It is still not clear how further forward Celtic are in naming their new man but, as a recent poll run on my site has shown, he would not be a popular choice amongst the Hoops fans.
