Celtic have again been linked with a move for Wigan Athletic midfielder Nick Powell, with The Scottish Sun reporting this weekend that his a target this January.

Powell’s contract expires at the end of the season meaning he has become a target for not just Celtic but also Rangers, Brighton and RB Leipzig, say the paper.

The 24-year-old has been an excellent attacking midfielder during his time at Wigan, helping them to promotion from League One last season with an excellent 15 goal return.

So far this term he has netted four times and assisted another five, missing almost two months of action with a hamstring problem.

Given he is free to sign a pre-contract with us should he show wish, he is a viable budget signing that could give us great depth in the middle of the park.

Tom Rogic is ordinarily trusted to play behind a central striker, but with no real playmaking replacement for the Australian should he be injured, without taking players like Callum McGregor or Ryan Christie out of position, Powell could help provide direct competition.

It would also allow us to focus transfer fee resources elsewhere, with our defence badly needing investment.
