As Celtic’s pursuit of Aaron Hickey continues, former Scotland defender Christophe Berra has said that should the Hoops be successful in capturing Hickey’s signature, it would be good business for the Parkhead club.

With the Hoops being linked with all and sundry this summer, the mission to strengthen the first team before the start of the new season has been given a timely boost.

In an interview serialised by The Daily Record, Berra said, “Aaron’s a Celtic supporter, he’s from Glasgow and Celtic were his first club.

“So, it’s not a surprise if they’re looking to take him back.

“I’ve seen talk of a fee in the region of £3.5m and that probably won’t all be paid up front.

“You’re looking at basically less than £1m for every year of say a four-year contract and I think for Aaron’s age and potential — especially when you consider some of the fees elsewhere for players that young — it would appear good business.

“I’m pretty confident Aaron would be a quality player for them.”

The Hoops have been looking to solve the left back problem ever since Kieran Tierney left Paradise for the bright lights of London two seasons ago and it would appear that the Glasgow giants have Hickey in their sights to fill that role.

However, Celtic do face competition for his signature as Fiorentina are also reportedly keen on the former Hearts man.

With the Champions League qualifier against FC Midtjylland just over two weeks away, Celtic face a race to get new signings in and prepared for the European clash.
