Few players generate as much discussion as Scott Brown. Both for Celtic fans and opposing supporters, Brown is always a frequent topic of debate.

Celtic supporters love him for his desire, passion and aggression, and the teams we face hate him for exactly the same reason.

However, this season, our club captain has struggled somewhat. Injuries have been a problem for him, and it’s fair to say that he’s no longer the one player that will start every single week, no questions asked.

As ever, this has led to a lot of talk, and the latest person to discuss the matter is former Celtic man and pundit John Hartson. Writing in his Evening Times column, he’s stated that Brown would still be a regular starter if he were in charge.

Hartson wrote: ‘How has he [Brown] gone from the team’s leader to being too old within a few weeks?’.

He continued: ‘I would still have the captain in my Celtic team. Every day of the week…Rodgers maybe has to work out who plays alongside him, but Brown remains key’.

Certainly, experience isn’t something that can necessarily be bought, and Brown has it in bucketloads. Furthermore, his love for the club always means that he’s putting in a little more effort than anyone else on the field, and that’s almost always evident in his performances.

That said, three is no denying that his performances have dipped somewhat this term, and so for Brendan Rodgers, there is a very fine line between picking him and moving him on.

Still, regardless, Brown has a role to play in this squad going forward, it just depends whether Hartson will be happy or whether Rodgers will look to tone down the regularity of Brown’s performances.
