The widely held debate of the Celtic manager being able to pick his own backroom staff took an interesting turn this week. With the furore of Eddie Howe apparently snubbing the move due to backroom staff issues and Neil Lennon NOT being allowed to pick his own right hand man/men, news broke of a potential move by Postecoglou to bring in his own should have been met with widespread agreement by the Hoops fans. Right?

It was widely rumoured over the past few days that Ange was looking to bring in former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat as  his assistant and the news was met with a “mixed” reaction by Hoops fans, not because of his affiliation with our rivals, but because of how Rangers were allowed to be affiliated with him.

Muscat joined Rangers back in 2002, at the height of the infamous E.B.T. years. He was part of a team that was filled with players old Rangers couldn’t afford unless they were acquired using a payment scheme designed to avoid paying tax. Many Hoops fans still feel aggrieved at the subsequent use of E.B.T. which were used as Rangers then, in that particular season, went on to win a domestic treble.

Is Ange Postecoglou the man for the Celtic job?

YES

YES

NO

NO

Muscat was in receipt of £1m worth of E.B.T. payments in the one year he remained at the club which is an incredible amount of money. You don’t need me to tell you the story of that season as Celtic lost the league by one goal to a team chock full of the tax avoidance scheme recipients.

This led to a conflict of interest in the eyes of the Celtic fans. How could they get behind a man that was part of a club that made now illegal side payments to players which in turn then denied other teams, including the Hoops, the chance to win silverware on a level playing field?

Tonight it has been confirmed that Muscat will now not join the Hoops as part of the Celtic revolution and that news will no doubt please many Hoops fans but it also raises another question. If the second in command is not now Muscat, who is it likely to be? Or does Ange even have a say?
